School and Community Suggestions
Parent Council
- Invite local drug or alcohol use experts to an information evening for parents and students
- Encourage parents to be good role models for their children by adding prevention messages to your parent council website or communication tools
- Encourage all graduating students to attend an event or activity highlighting the dangers of drug and alcohol misuse
- Encourage parents to attend an information evening on "Safe Graduation" planning
- Offer discounted or free taxi or limousine services for graduates. Work with your community leaders to get these discounts
- Encourage the school to take part in "No Regrets" training and events
- Encourage a Peer Led "What We've Learned" event to allow older students to talk to younger students about their personal negative experiences with alcohol, drugs, tobacco and dating
- Invite a "Smart Serve" Trainer into your school for an education evening for interested parents and students
Community Service Ideas
Students are often seeking opportunities for completion of required Community Service hours. The following suggestions may be of interest
- Teach about drug or alcohol use to youth groups in the community (Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, etc.)
- Volunteer with or develop a local Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving (OSAID) or Mothers Against Drinking and Driving (MADD) chapter
- Volunteer with the local Health Unit, Police, Health Agencies or other similar community groups
- Volunteer with local addiction/recovery agencies
