Local schools win Jump contest - The North York Mirror
January, 17 2008
North York rules! Grade 5 classes from Cassandra Public School and Gateway Public School are winners in a national contest to show they know the importance of physical activity and healthy eating in preventing type 2 diabetes. The North York students were among the 30 classrooms from across Canada chosen from 400 others and will be part of the Everyone Jump Celebration Concert series, which is a partnership between the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association and Novo Nordisk Canada Inc. Everyone Jump...Kids Changing Diabetes is a free program for Grade 5 classrooms that teaches students the importance of regular physical activity and healthy eating in preventing Type 2 diabetes. Teachers, along with students, work through a teaching manual and music CD. Students then expressed what they learned by designing a poster, writing a paragraph, composing song lyrics or creating a physical activity for the classroom to accompany one of the songs on the Everyone Jump CD. The top three winners will be awarded with a live Everyone Jump Celebration Concert at their school. The concert will be held Feb. 1 at Cassandra Public School and Feb. 4 at Gateway Public School. At the concert, students have the chance to dance and jump along. Everyone Jump...Kids Changing Diabetes started in 2005 to build awareness of the importance of regular physical activity and healthy eating as a way to prevent type 2 diabetes. Ontario Physical and Health Education Association is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting Ontario school communities through advocacy, programs and services. Novo Nordisk is a health-care company based in Mississauga and a world leader in diabetes care and biopharmaceuticals.
